All-rounder Deusdedit Muhumuza destroyed Qatar’s middle-order with his career-best bowling after his valuable unbeaten 19 as touring Uganda pulled off a surprise 18-run victory in the third and final Twenty20 International match at the Asian Town Stadium.
After being contained for a modest 134 for six, Uganda hit back at the midway when the hosts appeared to be cruising towards a 3-0 romp. Muhumuza’s five for 13 turned around the game and forced Qatar to lose eight wickets for 33 runs.
The victory helped Uganda end the short trip to Qatar on a winning note, though they had already lost the series earlier, having suffered defeats in the first two games.
Using conditions and the wicket well, Qatar bowlers pegged down the rival batsmen. With regular strikes, they limited Uganda to five down for 83. Muhumuza and Frank Akankwasa however had other ideas.
The sixth-wicket pair smashed 51 runs off just 28 balls to take the score to 134 before the Muhammad Awais Malik got Akankwasa out off the final delivery. Akankwasa hit two sixes and two fours to get 28 off 17 balls, while Muhumuza’s 19 not out had a six and a four.
Skipper Iqbal Hussain Chaudhry was the most successful Qatar bowler with two for 41, while Gayan Budhika, Awais and Musawar Shah shared three scalps.
Qatar were off to a flying start through Zaheeruddeen Ibrahim and Kamran Khan. They blasted 44 runs in a mere 3.4 overs. Khan was the first to go, being caught off Charles Waiswa by Akankwasa for 23 with two sixes and two fours.
Ibrahim, in the company of Imal Liyanage, maintained a good run-rate and carried the score to 74 when the latter was sent back by Frank Nsubuga for seven. But Qatar’s slump really started at 83 with the departure of Ibrahim, who offered a catch to Akankwasa off Trevor Bukenya. The opener hammered one six and seven boundaries to compile 44 in just 33 balls.
Bukenya delivered another blow after 14 runs, dismissing Muhammad Tanveer for 13 and then Muhumuza grabbed five of the next six scalps to dismantle Qatar for only 116, completing the big upset. Apart from Muhumuza, Bukenya and Waiswa picked two wickets each, while Nsubuga got one.
