Berlin: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier starts a five-day trip to Africa on Sunday.
He plans first to make a state visit to Kenya and then to fly on to Sudan on Thursday.
In Kenya, Steinmeier wants to give new impetus to the traditionally good bilateral relations. In Sudan, he wants to send a signal of support for the country’s democratization process.
For the president, it is the fourth trip to Africa in his three-year term. He was in Ethiopia last year.
The official programme in Nairobi does not start until Monday. It is the first state visit by a German president to Kenya.
Only former president Heinrich Luebke had been in the country in 1966, but not for a state visit. (DPA)
