PEOPLE watch Pakistani jets perform aerobatic manoeuvres during a ceremony to commemorate Pakistan Air Force’s ‘Operation Swift Retort’ against the Indian Air Force last year in February, in Karachi, on Thursday. Pakistan declared national celebrations on Thursday to mark one year to the day since it shot down an intruding Indian fighter jet, in a move seen as provocative and bizarre.
Prime Minister Imran Khan praised the air force in an address to political and military leaders on Wednesday night and an air show was conducted on Thursday as part of a commemorative ceremony. Khan said his air force caught regional rival India off guard with its response and warned of a similar retaliation for any future intrusions.
National dailies carried full-page segments congratulating the nation for what the government dubbed ‘National Surprise Day’, as ‘HappySurpriseDayIndia’ became a top trend on Twitter. (DPA)
