The Equine Veterinary Medical Center (EVMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal, Canada, to improve equine veterinary learning experiences and expand the EVMC Veterinary student externship programme.
The agreement aims to create a relationship between EVMC and the University of Montreal, which will see students from the University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMV) spend time at EVMC, engaging in clinical externships and stays in the field of equine veterinary medicine research.
In addition, the EVMC will receive three students per year from the University of Montreal. The graduates will be enrolled in veterinary medicine in the final year of their undergraduate degree. Students will have complete access to state of the art facilities at EVMC, including the use of laboratory equipment.
The agreement was signed by Saad Khalid Awan, Acting Director, EVMC, and Dr. Christine Theoret, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal.
Commenting on the collaboration, Dr. Theoret said: “The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Montreal is pleased to partner with the Equine Veterinary Medical Center. We would like to thank EVMC for opening its doors and expertise to our students, enabling them to develop their veterinary skills in an international context.
Awan said: “Conducting high-quality research and exploring innovative avenues in the field of education are considered fundamental at EVMC, and this approach is driven by the strategic direction provided to us by Qatar Foundation – our parent organisation.
Awan stated that the MoU was an example of EVMC implementing the vision of QF. “In line with QF’s efforts to promote educational activities, the agreement forms part of EVMC’s commitment to pursuing local and international collaborations to promote education and knowledge transfer, and make research opportunities more widely accessible.”
The EVMC, located within Al Shaqab’s world-class equine facility, comprises the Equine referral Hospital, the diagnostic laboratory and the research and education department. The centre, which is staffed by board-certified veterinarians and clinicians, uses advanced veterinary techniques and procedures to treat patients with equine diseases.
