Qatar is setting up a COVID-19 field hospital for workers who are quarantined in Industrial Area. The field hospital, which is under construction, will be ready within the next 10 days. The move is part of efforts to limit the spread of coronavirus.
This was announced by Lt Col Ahmed al Ghanim of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) prior to a field tour of the quarantined area by media persons and community leaders on Saturday.
“The temporary field hospital is located at Industrial Area -- Al Kassarat Street, Near Labor Dept Office, Street No 10. The facility will have an initial capacity to accommodate 50 in-patients and carry out preliminary tests on 1,000 people everyday,” Dr Khalid Abdul Noor, operation head of the hospital, said.
The hospital’s bed capacity will be increased to 200 and 350 in the second and third phase respectively, he added.
Dr Noor said the Ministry of Public Health has already set up an outpatient clinic in the area where testing was done and all the needed medication is given for free by the Hamad Medical Corporation.
A senior MoI official said the government has made all necessary arrangements for the return of life to normal and it is ensuring the availability of adequate foodstuff and medical care.
Some business establishments that provide essential materials have given permission for delivering goods at the designated area, he added.
“As part of efforts to create awareness about the pandemic, the ministry has distributed detailed booklets containing COVID-19 protocols in different Asian languages,” he said.
Money exchange houses will open soon with some regulations.
The MoI, in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), has sanitised over 12 million square metres of the Industrial Area that is home to over hundred thousand Asian workers during the quarantine period.
The MME has also removed 1,300 tonnes of garbages from the area. It removes 40 to 45 tonnes of garbage daily.
Similarly, Qatar Charity has distributed over 30,000 medical kits and 40,000 food kits that is sufficient for 15 to 20 days for a person.
In order to ensure people follow social distancing and for control of the delivery vehicles, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has opened check posts at many locations.
All individuals and vehicles leaving the quarantine area are being disinfected and sanitized.
A P Manikantan, a member of the delegation who visited the area, said Indian community organisations are committed to work with the authorities to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “We are keeping in touch with community members and offering all kinds of support as per the COVID-19 protocol and social distancing,” Manikantan said.
MoI Public Relations Director Brig Abdullah Khalifa al Muftah, community reach out officer Faizal Hudawi, media persons and representatives of different Asian community organisations visited the quarantined area.
The ministry lauded the support provided by different Asian community organisations.
