With the increase in population, the country's demand for power is expected to surge by 10 percent annually, and to meet this rapid demand, the country plans to increase its electricity generation capacity by 4,200 megawatts in the next couple of years, Qatar Water and Electricity Managing Director and General Manager Fahad al Mohannadi has said.
"The current capacity is around 8,800 megawatts and we plan to increase this capacity to 13,000 megawatts by 2018," Mohannadi told reporters on the sidelines of an event on Sunday. According to Mohannadi the current electricity consumption is 8,200 megawatts but the demand will continue further.
Mohannadi said there are also plans afloat to have another power plant between 2018 -2020."The location is known but I can't disclose this now. It all depends on the grid movement and technical studies and all this power generation will be adequate for the 2022 requirement," Mohannadi said.
Regarding the Umm Al Houl Power plant, Mohannadi said it is part of Qatar's biggest power and water projects and will meet will meet about 23 percent of the country's electricity demand.
The main stakeholders in the $2,5 billon Umm Al Houl power plant are Qatar Electricity and Water Company (60 percent), Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (5 percent), Qatar Petroleum (5 percent), Mitsubishi Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Company(30 percent). It is a Built-Own-Operate and Transfer (BOT) venture.
The project encompasses the construction of a natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant along with a desalination plant. The electricity and water produced from the project will be purchased by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation for a period of 25 years and after that it will be transferred to Kahramaa.
