Qatar spends nearly QR1.8 billion every year on treating diabetes and its complications, Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari has said. She was speaking at the opening of the two-day Qatar Diabetes Leadership Forum on Monday.
Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani inaugurated the forum in the presence of a number of ministers and dignitaries.
The annual cost of treating diabetes is likely to rise to QR4.9 bn by 2035 and QR8.4 bn by 2055, said Dr Kuwari.
Meanwhile, Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is planning to launch a comprehensive screening programme at its health centres beginning next year.
The programme also includes other diseases like hypertension, high cholesterol, thyroid diseases, cancers and mental health issues, said PHCC's Director of Operations Dr Samya Ahmad al Abdulla. Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of Qatar Diabetes Leadership Forum, Dr Abdulla urged everyone to join hands to fight diabetes.
