The State Audit Bureau has referred more than 15 private health centres to the Public Prosecution for manipulating invoices and submitting false data to patients leading to a loss of about QR150 million to the state under the previous health insurance system.
The Cabinet had suspended the health insurance service provided through the state-owned National Health Insurance Company (NHIC).
This came to light after some citizens and residents suspected that some private health centres and health insurance providers had taken advantage of the previous health insurance system and inflated the bills by manipulating invoices and data given to the patients which put a heavy financial burden on the state.
The Audit Bureau has also discovered that the Computer Section at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has defrauded the state of over QR140 million, according to a report in Al Sharq newspaper.
The case was referred to the Public Prosecution.
The State Audit Bureau is working to maintain the public money, verify the financial statements and contribute to improving the use of state resources to achieve sustainable development in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
According to the new law, the Audit Bureau is currently working on the development of control and auditing mechanisms and ensuring transparency and accountability for public money issues.
The new law represents a paradigm shift, where it enhances functional, administrative and financial independence of the Audit Bureau.
It also allows the Audit Bureau to select the means to gather information and submit an annual report to the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani about the activities, future plans and difficulties faced by the Audit Bureau.
