Kuwaiti Minister of State for Trade and Industry Khaled al Roudhan said on Thursday that an agreement has been reached with FIFA on new amendments to the country's sports law.
In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Roudhan thanked Qatar and all those who worked to bridge the gap between Kuwait and FIFA that had resulted in a ban on the country's participation in international sports competitions including those recognised by FIFA.
"After four months of negotiations, we reached an agreement with FIFA on a draft law to amend the existing legislation in order to comply with international requirements and also remain in line with the constitution and sovereignty of Kuwait," he said.
Roudhan stressed that the government will not interfere in the affairs of sports federations and allow them to do what they deem appropriate.
It may be recalled that the Qatar Football Association (QFA) had taken the initiative to convince FIFA about a new sports law that was being proposed by the Kuwaiti government in its bid to get the ban on the country lifted.
FIFA had banned Kuwait from international football in October 2015 on the ground that the government was interfering in the running of the game.
"The suspension will be lifted only when the Kuwait Football Association (KFA) and its members (the clubs) are able to carry out their activities and obligations independently," FIFA had said then.
