NURSING is a great profession that offers great opportunities to contribute to the community in Qatar, said University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) Dean and CEO Deborah White.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the annual Open House hosted by the Canadian institution on Saturday, White underscored the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes offered at the UCQ.
"We've been here in Qatar for the last 10 years and we are the only nursing programme in the country. Our students come from everywhere, around 39 nationalities. As health and wellness of the residents is an integral part of Qatar National Vision 2030, I think it is an opportunity for families and their children to become involved in a profession that is getting increasing profile and image," she said.
The UCQ Dean mentioned their strong collaboration with other local institutions in the field as well as their interest to further partner with other universities in the country. She also highlighted their initiatives to reach out to more Qatari nationals to pursue nursing as a profession.
The annual UCQ Open House welcomed a number of prospective students including their families and other members of the community. They were given a chance to learn more about the UCQ's Canadian- accredited nursing programmes and view some of the state-of-the-art facilities within the campus such as the Clinical Simulation Centre.
"UCQ offers good learning experience and environment with all their high quality equipment that prepares us in our field. Personally, it is my dream to be of help to people by being a nurse," said Ayat, a senior student at UCQ from Sudan.
"Nursing has always been a passion for me. I was very lucky to be part of UCQ. One of the amazing features in this campus is their Clinical Simulation Centre, which is a safe environment for us students to learn. I am on my senior year in the university and I am excited to start working," said Rawan, a Palestinian-Canadian student.
UCQ will accept applicants for its four-year Bachelor of Nursing programme and two-year Master of Nursing programme until March 1, 2018.
