Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi has called for solidarity and the provision of humanitarian aid to the civilians of the Gaza Strip, most notably the hardest hit areas.

In a speech before the Third South Summit, held in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Sunday, Al Muraikhi said that ever since October 7, the brotherly Palestinian people have been subject to an unprecedented aggression. He reiterated Qatar’s supportive stance of the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determinate and to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as the Palestinian people’s attainment of all of their rights.

Al Muraikhi added that this stance only does justice and is based on the respect of international law, the United Nations charter, and the relevant international legitimacy resolutions. Al Muraikhi said that this stance is in complete harmony with the G77’s stance since its establishment, and indeed reflects the stance of the peace-loving peoples of the world.

He said that developing countries must solidify their cooperation, joint action, and solidarity, in addition to stand united in order to face present day challenges.

Al Muraikhi indicated that the State of Qatar continues to attach importance to cooperation among the countries of the South and to strengthening the work of the Group of 77 and China.

He added that in March 2023, Qatar hosted the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), which adopted the Doha Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031 (DPoA). Moreover, he said that on the sidelines of LDC5, the Ministerial Meeting on South-South Cooperation was also held.

Al Muraikhi referred to the announcement of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani regarding the State of Qatar’s financial contribution amounting to $60 million, of which $10 million were allocated to support the implementation of DPoA for the Least Developed Countries, and another $50 million to support DPoA outcomes and enable Least Develop Countries to become more adaptive.

Al Muraikhi added that Qatar’s development and humanitarian contributions as well as its emergency assistance provided to brotherly and friendly countries of the South continue, whereby the Qatar Fund For Development provided the countries of the South more than $7 billion in the period between 2014 - 2024.

He said this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Group of 77 and China. Since its inception, the group has had a pioneering role in defending the interests of developing countries at the United Nations, and has achieved great successes in strengthening South-South cooperation, he noted.

Al Muraikhi reiterated the State of Qatar’s support for the issues of the South, for which it continues to play an active role within the Group, embodying the principles of cooperation, solidarity, and joint action.
