Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani on Thursday inspected the water security mega strategic reservoirs project in Al Thumama.
The PM reviewed the progress made in the project, completion of its various stages, and the efforts of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) to complete projects as per the schedule.
Kahramaa President Engineer Essa bin Hilal al Kuwari confirmed that Kahramaa would complete all its projects as per the schedule.
During the visit, a presentation was made on the strategic water reservoirs project, its importance in achieving water security of the state, stages of the work of the project, achievements made on the ground, and the efforts of Kahramaa to implement the project according to the schedule during the unjust siege.
Excavation and settling of the land of the reservoirs, laying of foundations and necessary infrastructure have already been completed.
The PM underlined the necessity of diversifying resources and finding suitable alternatives locally and internationally through economic openness.
The construction of the first reservoir, which is undergoing testing and experimentation in preparation for water pumping, has also been completed. The second reservoir will be completed by the end of January and the third by the end of February.
The first phase of Qatar's QR14.5billion, 15 mega reservoirs project, which can store as much as 1,500mn gallons of water, is expected to be ready in the first half of this year.
"The roofs of reservoirs will be covered with solar cells to provide electricity needed for operating the reservoirs. About 200 megawatts of electricity will be produced from solar cells installed on the reservoirs' roofs," Kuwari added.
