The first edition of the Al Thumama Ramadan Championship for football will be held at Al Furjan Stadium in Al Thumama under the aegis of Qatar Sports for All Federation at the beginning of the month of Ramadan for age groups 10 to 14 years (2009 to 2013) with the participation of 22 to 24 teams.

The details were announced by the organizing committee at a press conference on Wednesday held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, in the presence of Hassan bin Ali Al Ishaq, member of the Municipal Council and head of the organizing committee, and Abdullah Al Dosari, Head of Activities and Events at Qatar Sports for All Federation.

Hassan Ali Al Ishaq, member of the municipal council and head of the tournament’s organizing committee, thanked the Qatar Sports for All Federation for its cooperation in organizing the Al-Thumama Ramadan Championship. “We hope the tournament will continue for many years. I would also like, on this occasion, to offer my highest congratulations to the wise leadership on our national team winning the Asian Cup title. And I also congratulate you on the occasion of the blessed month of Ramadan,” he said.

Al Ishaq also confirmed that registration for the tournament is being done through the Qatar Sports for All Federation, and after completing the lists of participating teams and players, there will be a technical meeting and then the draw will be held, on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

Regarding the prizes for the tournament, he said, “The first place team will get QR7,000, a cup and medals, the second place team will get QR5,000 and medals, the third place team will get QR3,000 and medals, the best player, top-scorer will get a will get a prize of QR500, while best Fair Play team will receive a prize of QR1,000.”

He stressed that the tournament is not limited to the people of Al Thumama only, but is open to everyone, and to a number of schools. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education and also the Ministry of Interior were contacted to coordinate traffic, especially since the stadium is located between the residents’ homes.

He added: “Our ambition from the beginning has been to stimulate the sports movement in the region. The idea came from Younis Ahmed, the former Al Annabi goalkeeper, and the idea is not for one person. The people of Al Thumama always come together constantly, and our goal for the tournament is to support Qatari sports and clubs strongly.”
