Minister of Municipality HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah on Tuesday inaugurated Mesaieed Park in Al Wakra Municipality.
The park, which was designed and implemented by the Public Parks Department in accordance with the highest international standards, will serve the residents of Mesaieed and neighbouring areas.
The Minister of Municipality stated that Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Municipality, gives foremost priority to upgrading public parks and afforestation nationwide, in addition to increasing green spaces to serve as recreational and healthy settings for citizens, residents and visitors, in pursuit of achieving the environmental sustainable development goals, in consistent with the National Development Strategy 2024-2030 and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
He said the ministry has been keen on launching several national initiatives over the past years to increase the green spaces in Qatar, chief amongst which are the ten million tree and one million tree initiatives that primarily aim to promote life quality in cities and achieve the sustainable development, which broadly helped all eight Qatari cities win the title of healthy cities by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The mMinister added that seven Qatari cities have joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, affirming the remarkable development in all parks and green areas in the state, with the number of parks, plaza and corniche reaching 144 in 2023. He highlighted that the percentage of green spaces nationwide reached 43 sq. m in 2023, thanks to the collaboration with all entities in the country.
He confirmed that the ministry is in the process of opening new parks as part of its plans.
For his part, Abdullah Ahmed Al Karani, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs, said that the Public Services Affairs Sector at the Ministry of Municipality pays great attention to establishing new public parks and rehabilitating old and dilapidated ones to remain at the required level that the Ministry seeks to maintain and upgrade to match international standards.
He added: “In addition to developing a strategic plan in coordination with the competent authorities in the ministry that will contribute to increasing the green spaces and the number of parks in the country distributed among all municipalities during the coming years.”
The public parks department affiliated with the sector will follow up on these projects in their various stages, from studying preliminary designs, tendering procedures, awarding, and other implementations, until these parks see the light.
For his part, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Sada, Acting Director of the Public Parks Department, confirmed that the establishment of Mesaieed Park was completed within ten months, and the administration will continue to supervise its care and operation.
This comes within the framework of the keenness and interest of the Ministry of Municipality to create and develop public parks and gardens with the latest international standards, to be a healthy, recreational and sports outlet for the public in various regions of the country, as this park represents a distinctive and important addition to the recreational facilities in the State of Qatar, which contributes to enhancing the services provided by the Ministry of Municipality to the public.
He added that the opening of Mesaieed Park comes as one of the first public parks that will be opened during the coming period, in addition to being considered one of the industrial geographical areas in which the ministry is keen to increase the green area in order to increase the green areas because of its positive role in purifying and improving the air quality in the Mesaieed area.
It is worth noting that the park includes a sports walkway with a rubber floor measuring 676 metres long, and extends over an area of about 38,029 square metres, where the green spaces represent about 11,316 square meters of natural grass, trees, and palm trees, which are irrigated with the latest modern automatic irrigation methods.
The park also contains 3 football fields (the first field is 1,847 square metres for adults, the second field is 450 square metres for children from 6 to 15 years old, and the third field is 288 square metres for children younger than 8 years).
In addition to a basketball court with an area of 553 square meters, it also contains a tennis court with an area of 667 square metres. The garden also includes a lighted water fountain with an area of 130 square metres, and 6 illuminated pergolas with a total area of 350 square meters.
