Pearling Season International School (PSIS) recently hosted an International Day celebration. Students, parents and expatriates from various countries joined the festivities, with around 54 nationalities celebrating the unity in diversity.
Different national and regional booths were put up with a variety of cuisines and cultural displays. The students and parents indulged in delicacies from around the world and enjoyed various activities prepared by the parents and staff. The booths showcased national customs, traditions, history, iconic facts, clothing, foods and arts.
The Indonesian booth used batik as the theme. The batik designs, both modern and traditional, fashioned by Indonesian women, awed visitors. Rosanna Syan guided their efforts in making batik designs using a tool called canting and molten wax.
"Indonesia has produced batik clothes for the last two millennia and in 2009 UNESCO recognised batik as the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity," explained Muhammad 'Tofu' Taufiq, who wore traditional Acehnese province attire.
"The booth not only prepared delicious cakes but also quizzes with prizes for students who gave the right answers," said Agung, a parent who actively contributed to the celebration and actively explained to the students about Indonesian cuisine.
According to Sorayaal Yahya, a dentist whose child studies in the school, the festival not only served as a learning process for the students but also as the perfect way to display and to promote Indonesian batik and traditional cuisine.
Another parent from Indonesia, Boy Dharmawan said,"We wish the students could visit Indonesia during the upcoming summer vacation to attend the 18th Asian Games, which will be held in the cities of Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2."
