The 67 metres long and four metres wide bridge has many additional features like space for small shops, ATM machines, vending machines, seating area, bicycle patch, advertising spaces and elevators with a capacity of 1,600kg for 21 people.
Speaking on the occasion, President of Ashghal, Saad bin Ahmed bin Ibrahim al Mohannadi, said that the new pedestrian bridge on Al Matar Street will enhance traffic safety in the area and reduce pedestrian accidents.
"Al Matar Street is characterised by the presence of a large number of commercial and residential establishments that attract large numbers of pedestrians.
Therefore, the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Transport and Communications and Ashghal conducted a joint study on the traffic density in the area, pedestrian accidents and other factors and it was selected for building a bridge for pedestrians," Mohannadi added.
The design of the bridge located between Ooredoo (Building 2) and Qatar Airways Holiday headquarters combines modern and traditional Qatari architecture.
Chief Executive Officer of ELAN Group Jaber Abdullah al Ansari said, "The new bridge adds to the beauty of the city and is an attempt to build a pedestrian-friendly environment in Qatar in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030 even as the country prepares to host huge events such as FIFA World Cup 2022." The new bridge is financially self-sustainable in the long term through the leasing of mini-shops, vending machines & ATM machines, in addition to offering advertising spaces.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairman of ELAN Group Abdul Aziz bin Nasser al Khalifa and representatives of several entities.
