THE Qatar e-Nature School Contest 2018, held under the patronage of Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed al Hammadi, concluded with an awards ceremony at Sheraton Doha on Wednesday.
A total of 321 students from 63 government schools and 44 private schools participated in this year's edition of the contest from which five teams competed for the championship.
Lebanese School emerged the winner and walked away with a voucher worth QR9,000 and gold medals. Markhiya Primary School for Girls was the runner-up winning a voucher worth QR6,000 and silver medals whereas Al Manar International School came third and received a voucher worth QR4,500 and bronze medals.
AbiAyoub Al Ansari School and Global Academy International came fourth and fifth respectively winning vouchers worth QR3,000 and QR1,500.
The ceremony was attended by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Programs and Activities Head Fatima al Obaidli, Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC) Deputy Director Youssuf al Khulaifi, Sasol GTL Ventures President Phinda Vilakazi, members of the media, teachers and families.
The Qatar e-Nature app and website were launched by Sasol in cooperation with FEC in 2013 with the aim of creating awareness about Qatar's flora and fauna. The Qatar e-Nature School Contest was launched in 2014 to raise awareness among children.
Khulaifi said:"Building a generation aware of its country's nature and able to protect the environment is our key objective at FEC. This takes time, but the school contest helps to advance this process and cause."
Obaidli said:"Enriching knowledge and promoting awareness of the national environment, Qatar e-Nature School Contest is in line with the ministry's vision and objectives of building an enlightened generation of leaders. We are pleased with this initiative and this cooperation with Sasol."
The app, which can be downloaded for free, has won four awards including Environmental Contribution Award in 2015 and Best Initiative on CSR in the Energy Sector in Qatar in 2016. (Photograph by Rafeek Palayoor)
