The first zone of the Al Wakrah Beach Development Project will be opened to the public on May 15, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ashghal said the main works of the first zone of the project have been completed.
The opening of this zone comes as part of an integrated plan developed by Ashghal for the development of the Corniche areas in Doha City, Al Wakrah City, Al Khor and Al Shamal, it said.
Ashghal is developing the beach of Al Wakrah, which is composed of three zones covering an area of 335,000 square metres, and is designed to become a leisure destination suitable for families.
Project Engineer at Buildings Project Management Department Eng Khalid al Najjar said 2,100 metres of the interlock for the pedestrian walkways have been completed. Around 120 pergolas will be installed to provide shaded areas for families. Currently, all the pergolas for zone 1 have been installed.
The project also includes three green areas covering 25,000 square metres. In addition, 98 solar lighting poles will be installed to preserve the environment and reduce electricity consumption.
The lightening poles will be distributed along the beach. Also, a 2,500-metre-long metal fence along the beach will be erected with three entrances.
The remaining works in the project will be completed by July 2018 including 12 buildings for public toilets distributed along the three beach areas, three buildings to be used as cafeteria in the future, and three guard rooms.
The project was launched in October last year and Ashghal has been keen to open this part of the project to the public ahead of schedule.
