India ’s internationally acclaimed film direc - tor Adoor Gopalakrishnan has been named the recipient of Indian expatriate forum Pravasi Doha’s annual Bashir Award.
Pravasi Doha office bearers announced this at a function in Kerala recently.
The annual Bashir award was instituted by Pravasi Doha, a socio cultural and literary organisation established in Qatar 23 years ago, and Kerala-based Pravasi Trust.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan was selected for the award by a committee comprising well-known writer, script writer and director Padmabhushan M T Vasudevan Nair (Chairman and chief patron), Prof. M A Rahman, Babu Mather, K K Sudhakaran and P Shemzuddin, founder members of Pravasi Doha, and C V Rappai, former chairman of Pravasi Doha. The committee lauded Adoor’s outstanding contribution to Malayalam cinema and the Indian film industry. Adoor has set new trends in Malayalam cinema by transcending the commercial formulae and styles in filmmaking, the award committee observed.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs.50, 000, a sculpture made by artist Namboodiri, and a citation.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s famous movies include Swayamvaram, Elipathayam, Vidheyan, Kodiyettam, Mukhamukham, Nizhalkuthu, Anantharam, and Mathilukal, based on a novel by Malayalam writer Vaikkom Mohammed Bashir.
Adoor received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2004 and has been honoured with more than 40 national and international awards, including British Film Institute Award for Elipathayam (1981). His movies have been screened at several international film festivals including in Cannes, Berlin, London, Toronto and Rotterdam.
Former recipients of the prestigious Pravasi Doha award include former Kerala chief minister EMS Namboodirippad, musicians Njeralath Ramapoduval and Sarachandra Marathey, actors Madhu, Balan K Nair and Nilambur Ayisha, writers Kovilan and VK N, poets Sugatha Kumari and Kadammanitta, literary critics Dr. M Leelavathi and Prof.
M K Sanoo, writer-scholar Dr. U R Anantha Murthi, architect Laurie Baker, English writer Dr. Ronad E Asher, environmentalist Leelakumari Amma, social reformer and freedom fighter M R B, playwright ad director K T Mohammed, and India’s leading oncologist Dr. V P Gangadharan.
Pravasi Doha has been organising Indian and international film festivals in Qatar since 1996 besides hosting literary seminars and cultural programmes. Pravasi Doha will also present the Prof. M N Vijayan endowment scholarship of Rs.15, 000 to a brilliant student who needs financial support to pursue studies.
