The water production stages at Umm Al Houl Power Plant, which currently pumps 136 million gallons of water per day, is complete, Fahad bin Hamad al Mohannadi, General Manager and Managing Director of Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), has said.
Mohannadi, who is also the Chairman of Umm Al Houl Energy, said the completion of the power generation phase of the plant, which is scheduled to produce 2,520 megawatts of electricity, will soon be announced.
"The completion of the water production stages at Umm Al Houl confirms the project is ahead of schedule and demonstrates the ability of QEWC to fulfill its obligations to the country," he said.
The company is working on local projects with speed and accuracy, he noted.
"The achievement proves that QEWC would complete the work of the power station for its official opening, in October," Mohannadi said.
The unjust blockade imposed on Qatar did not affect the pace of QEWC's electricity and water projects, he said.
Mohannadi said Umm Al Houl power station is different from the other stations as it was characterised by the fact that some stages were completed and operated and the network was supplied with production, while the works continued at other stages in the station.
He said Umm Al Houl project will boost the country's consumption of water and electricity, adding around 25 percent to the current capacity.
"Upon completion, it will be one of the largest power and desalination plants in the region, producing 60 million gallons of reverse osmosis, making it the largest terminal in the region and Middle East," he said.
Mohannadi said QEWC was able to complete all its projects to meet the demand for electricity in the country.
Umm Al Houl Power Plant is estimated to cost approximately QR11 billion. QEWC owns 60 percent of the Umm Al Houl plant, Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Foundation each own 5 percent each. Mitsubishi TIBCO owns the remaining 30 percent.
