Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah on Sunday promised his Egyptian fans to play at the World Cup despite a shoulder injury sustained during the Champions League final in Kiev.
Salah's injury in a tangle with Real Madrid Captain Sergio Ramos came shortly before the half-hour and clearly left Liverpool shocked after a good performance until that point.
Salah, who had scored 44 goals for Liverpool this season, left the pitch in tears.
"It was a very tough night, but I'm a fighter. Despite the odds, I'm confident that I'll be in Russia to make you all proud,"the 25-year-old said on his Twitter and Facebook accounts.
"Your love and support will give me the strength I need,"he added.
Earlier in the day, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi wished the Liverpool striker a quick recovery.
"My heartfelt wish for the Egyptian hero Mohamed Salah to recover from his injury, and I hope he will return to the field soon and remain a brilliant Egyptian star,"al-Sissi said in a tweet.
Egyptians pin great hope on Salah in the coming World Cup in Russia. Salah scored twice in a win over Congo that qualified Egypt for their third finals - and first since 1990.
The Egyptian Football Association had good news as they tweeted Sunday that x-rays showed Salah had only damaged ligaments.
Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports Khalid Abdel Aziz told local al-Masry al-Youm newspaper the professional would be treated in Britain for around two weeks before joining the team's pre-World Cup training camp.
Egypt must submit their final squad list for Russia to football governing body FIFA on June 4. They meet the hosts, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group A.
Following Salah's injury, Egyptians reacted on social media, with some claiming that there was a conspiracy against him and with others insulting Ramos.
"O Allah, avenge those who harmed Mohamad Salah on purpose!"Mahmoud Yousef, a Cairo University professor, said on Facebook, urging FIFA to open a probe into the incident.
Another Facebook user said:"He plays Romanian wrestling,"in reference to Ramos. Salah is hugely popular in Egypt and for many in his home village he is an idol and a role model.
