In celebration of the 126th Philippine Independence Day (PID), the PID Cup 2024 basketball competition took place on June 21, in the UDST Multipurpose Hall.

The much-awaited event featured five powerful teams: Brgy. Malasakit, JRM Kabalen, 3 John’s Barbershop, Stallions Hoopers, and Ashghals. The atmosphere was electric as fans and supporters filled the hall, ready to witness the intense competition and showcase of basketball talent.

After a series of exciting and hard-fought matches, 3 John’s Barbershop and Brgy. Malasakit were tied as champions in a thrilling exhibition championship game. They went back and forth and ended with the same score of 68 points when the final buzzer sounded. The victory was a testament to the team’s skill, teamwork, and determination, earning them the PID Cup 2024 title.

The event was graced by the Philippine Ambassador to Qatar, Her Excellency Lillibeth Pono. In her special message to the participating teams, she highlighted the importance of sports in fostering camaraderie, unity, and national pride among Filipinos abroad. She also commended all the teams for their dedication and sportsmanship, emphasizing the spirit of bayanihan that the PID Cup embodies.

Presented by Broaster, with owner Jairus Esquevel and organized by SBP Qatar PIBAQ, the PID Cup 2024 was also a vibrant celebration under the “Arat Na, Pinas!” banner, spearheaded by PID Chairman Jyerex Abrasado. The event not only showcased the athletic prowess of the Filipino community in Qatar, but also strengthened the bonds among Filipinos, celebrating their shared heritage and independence.

Vouchers and special rewards were also given by McDonalds and TINBO. The awarding was hosted by Kristina Olase of Ting Talk Show.

The PID Cup 2024 was one of the highlights of this year’s Independence Day festivities, inspiring future generations to continue the tradition of excellence and unity.
