With the support of philanthropists in Qatar, Qatar Charity has implemented 56 water projects in different regions in Djibouti, benefiting more than 9,266 people in 2023.

These projects come within the framework of Qatar Charity’s continued efforts to provide safe drinking water to needy communities in many regions in Djibouti, reduce the effects of drought, contribute to protecting the environment and reduce diseases and epidemics caused by polluted water.

The water projects implemented in Djibouti included the installation of 18 surface wells powered by solar energy in three different regions - Dakhl, Ali Sabieh and Tajoura regions - in addition to installing a tank, faucets and a drinking basin for animals, benefiting about 9,000 people in 18 different regions.

It also included the implementation of 38 projects to deliver water to the homes of families who needed to extend water networks and deliver it to their homes, along with installing a meter and registering with the Water Corporation to obtain water on an ongoing basis, benefiting 38 families, or about 266 people, in the capital, Djibouti.

Commenting on the projects, Minister of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Livestock in Djibouti Mohamed Ahmed Awala praised the great role played by Qatar Charity and its efforts in implementing water projects, noting the implementation of more than 43 surface wells in different areas that will cover the water needs of the population, especially the areas that were damaged by drought during previous years.

For his part, Director of the Water Department at the ministry Saeed Khaireh stated that Qatar Charity’s interventions in the field of water provision are very important, as many areas in the State of Djibouti suffer from drought and the lack of potable water.

He added that interventions provide an opportunity for rural families to begin cultivating their agricultural lands that have been abandoned due to drought.

Officials of the areas benefiting from the wells expressed their happiness with these projects and said that this is the first time that wells have been implemented in their areas with the installation of solar energy and a tank with faucets.

These components have greatly facilitated getting clean water, especially for children, women and the elderly, and have also reduced the suffering of withdrawing water directly from the well or obtaining it through traditional methods and having to travel long distances to fetch safe water. It is worth noting that Qatar Charity had implemented 25 wells during the previous years from 2016 to 2020, benefiting about 12,500 people in the provinces of Dakhl, Tajoura and Ali Subeih.
