At least five people have been killed in a suspected gas explosion in the western Turkish coastal city of Izmir.

At least 57 people were injured, according to authorities.

According to initial findings, the explosion was caused by leaking gas in a restaurant, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote in a post on X.

The provincial governor said that some of the injured are in a critical condition and parts of the building were severely damaged by the explosion.

The incident is being investigated.

The first floor of the building and the façade were partially destroyed, as seen on images broadcast by the CNN Türk TV channel.

Cars parked in front of the building were also damaged in the blast.

According to the broadcaster, surrounding houses were damaged and residents were told to evacuate the area.

Gas explosions in residential buildings occur time and again in Turkey.
