Indian community organisations in Qatar observed International Yoga Day in Doha recently.
The events organised by the Indian embassy in Qatar and Indian socio-cultural association Samanvayam, were attended by a large number of people including women and children. International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21 since its inception in 2015. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN address suggested the date of June 21, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.
Yoga is considered as an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not only about exercise but is a way of discovering a sense of oneness with oneself, the world and nature.
A Yoga session held at Qatar Sports Club was attended by Indian Ambassador HE P Kumaran, and representatives of different socio-cultural organisations. The event featured Yoga demonstration by experts. It provided an opportunity for all to participate in a Yoga session based on the Common Yoga Protocol that comprises various standing and sitting postures, Kapalbhati & Pranayam and breathing techniques, followed by meditation.
Members of diplomatic community, officials from Indian Embassy, office-bearers of Indian Community Benevolent Forum, Indian Business Professionals Network and different socio-cultural organisations attended the Yoga session at Qatar Sports Club.
As a prelude to the celebration of the 4th International Day of Yoga, numerous Yoga workshops and demonstrations in collaboration with well-known Doha based Yoga Studios were conducted by the Embassy in the last two months, including workshops for students in various schools based in Doha. In addition, Yoga sessions for the Indian community based in Al-Khor were also organized.
A Yoga session organised by Indian forum Samanvayam at Al Jazeera Academy was attended by 200 people from different walks of life. A one-hour session was held under the guidance of a Yoga instructor at the Academy of International Music Art & Culture. It was attended by the third secretary of Indian embassy Shruthi Purushotham (Education & Culture), President of Indian Cultural Centre Milan Arun, General Secretary Juttas Paul, General Secretary of Indian Sports Centre Habib Un Nabi, Indian Community Benevolent Forum Vice-President PN Baburajan, Management Committee Member Iqbal Chettuva and Samanvayam President Santhosh Kumar Pillai.
