RomecTypeface:> An armed gang ambushed a van loaded with cash in southern Italy and made off with 3 million euros ($3.2mn), authorities said.

The brazen heist took place on a busy road near the city of Brindisi during morning rush hour on Thursday.

The gang opened fire as it forced the cash transporter to the side of the road. The perpetrators also set several cars on fire to hinder the police response. A large cloud of black smoke hung over the scene for hours. The robbers - believed to number between eight to 10 people - were able to escape, police said.

No one was injured, although police said the five security guards in the van were left in a state of shock.

The cash transporter was damaged and at least four other vehicles went up in flames. The road was closed in both directions for several hours, causing long traffic jams. (DPA)
