DOHA: The Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' has announced the completion of the first package of the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Al Ebb and Leabaib and the completion of the main works of the fifth package of the project.

In this context, Head of Northern Areas Section at the Roads Projects Department at Ashghal Eng Abdullah Al Nuaimi explained that the authority is implementing a plan to provide integrated infrastructure services and facilities and advanced road networks in the areas of Al Ebb and Leabaib, which includes five implementation packages that will serve a total of 5,592 residential plots when completed.

The first package and the main works of the fifth package have been completed, and development works for the second, third and fourth packages are currently underway.

Eng Al Nuaimi added that the first and fifth packages serve a total of 1,910 residential plots for citizens’ lands.

The works that have been implemented have achieved extensive improvements in the area by providing advanced infrastructure services and an internal road network and linking it to the existing main road network, as well as providing connectivity with public facilities in the area, which contributes to enhancing the smooth flow of traffic in it, and allows citizens to build their homes and keep pace with the population growth in the area in the future.

The authority has completed all the main works of the fifth package of the project, and work is currently underway to complete the sewage connections to homes and afforestation works.

Development project in Al Ebb and Leabaib (Package 1)

Project Engineer at the Northern Areas Projects Section of the Roads Projects Department at Ashghal Eng Saeed Al Malki said that the first package of the project serves about 1,123 residential plots for citizens’ lands.

The works in this package included the development and construction of a 27km road network and 52km pedestrian walkways, in addition to providing traffic safety elements such as street lighting systems and poles, signboards and road markings, in addition to providing 5,185 parking spaces.

A 27km long surface and groundwater drainage network, a 15 km long treated water network, and 24 km of sewage lines were also established and connected to the main sewage network with the aim of developing the area and eliminating the use of private septic tanks for homes.

Project Engineer at the Northern Regions Section of the Roads Projects Department Eng Noura Al Mohannadi pointed out that the fifth package of the project serves about 787 residential plots of citizens’ lands.

The works included the development and construction of a 24km road network and 11km of pedestrian and bicycle paths, while providing traffic safety elements such as street lighting poles, signboards and road markings, in addition to providing 5,043 parking spaces.

The infrastructure development works included the construction of a 22.5km surface and groundwater drainage network, a 13km treated water network, and 21km sewage lines. Work is currently underway to complete the sewage connections to homes and landscaping works.

Challenges during implementation

One of the challenges facing the implementation team in the first and fifth packages was the high groundwater level in the area, which required studying the most appropriate solutions for draining and discharging this water before starting construction work.

The rocky nature of the soil also caused delays in completing some excavation work. Excavations were carried out at a depth of about 30 meters underground, which necessitated raising worker safety measures, in addition to coordinating with several government agencies to complete infrastructure development work.

It is worth mentioning that the AlEbb and Leabaib development project, with its five packages, implements the authority’s strategy of supporting and encouraging local manufacturers. About 80 percentof the materials used in the project are relied upon from local Qatari sources, including but not limited to lighting poles and lamps, drainage pipes, precast manholes, electrical cables, signboards, and interlocking.
