DOHA: Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie has headed Qatar’s delegation participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Green Development Forum, which concluded its work on Monday in the People’s Republic of China.

The minister delivered Qatar’s speech at the forum, during which he stressed that Qatar attaches great importance to green development and harmonizing economic and social growth with the preservation of the environment and natural resources. This is reflected in Qatar National Vision 2030, which is based on four basic pillars, including “environmental development,” which always seeks to achieve synergy between economic expansion and environmental preservation.

He pointed out that Qatar recently launched the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030, which is the main catalyst in driving the wheel of economic diversification in Qatar while ensuring environmental sustainability.

“Ensuring energy security remains a major global constraint on development, and Qatar, as a leading global supplier of natural gas, is well positioned to play a key role in the global green development and the transition to a low-carbon future. We have also launched the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy, which is in line with Qatar’s commitment to a greener and more prosperous future,” he added.

He explained that the issuance of green sukuk was recently announced, which is the first of its kind in the region and represents the entry of Qatar into a new phase of financing environmentally friendly projects, as Qatar focuses on achieving a balance between human needs and preserving the environment, pointing to Qatar’s announcement of the Environmental, Social, Corporate Governance and Sustainability Strategy for the Financial Sector, which aims to enhance the efficiency of the financial system in supporting national sustainability goals.

On the sidelines of his participation in the forum, Dr Al Subaie met with several ministers of some countries and international officials, including Mohamed Rashid, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy in the Republic of Maldives; Huang Runqiu, Minister of Environment in the People's Republic of China; Ivan Prykhodzka, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection in the Republic of Belarus.

He also met with Zhang Ming, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization; Ali Salajegheh, Vice President and Head of the Environmental Protection Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran; Aziz Abdukhakimov, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Yerlan Nisanbayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The meetings addressed several issues, most notably supporting joint efforts to address climate challenges, as well as enhancing cooperation between all parties to preserve the environment and biodiversity.
