LondoncTypeface:> Lionel Messi has sustained a ligament injury in his right ankle, his club Inter Miami have confirmed. The 37-year-old suffered the injury on international duty with Argentina during their Copa America victory over Colombia in Miami. The forward went down before the break and was subsequently forced off the field just after the hour, limping off in tears to watch on from the bench. Lautaro Martinez’s goal in extra time saw Argentina edge to a 1-0 win and Messi was joined by Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi to lift his side’s record-breaking 16th Copa America trophy. Inter Miami are currently second in the Eastern Conference table in the MLS and they issued an update on the club website confirming the extent of Messi’s injury. “After a medical evaluation, it has been determined that Leo Messi has suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle,” the statement read. “The captain’s availability will be determined by periodic assessments and the progress of his recovery.” (PA Media/dpa)
