NEW YORK: Qatar has stressed the need to take irreversible steps to achieve the two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Qatar stressed that the Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of the Palestinian land, and rejected any attempt to bring about demographic or regional change in it.

This came in the statement of Qatar delivered by HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, before the quarterly open debate of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Sheikha Alya stated that this periodic session comes in unprecedented circumstances in light of the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, especially with the number of civilian deaths and injuries reaching nearly 130,000, and the number of displaced persons reaching nearly two million, as a result of the indiscriminate bombing of homes, hospitals and schools, and the policy of collective punishment and starvation.

She stressed that Qatar condemns all forms of targeting civilians and warns against the expansion of the circle of violence, noting that it hastened to make intensive diplomatic efforts to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire that achieves the exchange of hostages and prisoners, the protection of civilians and the delivery of aid, and paves the way for a serious peace process leading to a just and comprehensive political settlement, explaining that these efforts have achieved tangible results in alleviating the suffering of the people of Gaza.

She reiterated her welcome for the adoption of Security Council Resolution No. 2735, which stressed the importance of the ongoing diplomatic efforts of the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States of America with the aim of reaching a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, noting that the three countries called in a joint statement on both Hamas and Israel to conclude an agreement that embodies the principles set by HEPresident Joe Biden, President of the United States of America, last May, stressing that the State of Qatar will not hesitate to commit to joint mediation efforts in order to unify visions and bridge the gap between the two parties.
