The Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the Qatar Central Bank, National Cyber Security Agency, and Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority, has cautioned the public about the rising threat of skimming devices being used by cybercriminals to commit financial fraud.

Skimming devices are discreetly installed on ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) machines, and other card readers to capture card information and record PINs entered by users.

To combat the growing menace, the MoI has launched a social media campaign to educate the public on how to identify tampered machines and protect themselves from skimming.

The MoI recommends that users opt for ATMs located inside bank branches, as these machines are less likely to be compromised.

Additionally, users should check if the card reader is secure by wiggling it; a loose or out-of-place reader may indicate tampering.

It also advises vigilance for any unusual attachments around the card slot. To further protect their PINs, users should cover the keypad with their hand while entering their numbers.

It has also cautioned the public to be wary of individuals lingering around ATMs, as they could be potential perpetrators or lookouts for skimming operations.

Victims or those suspecting skimming incidents are urged to report cybercrimes to the Economic and Cyber Crimes Combating Department.

Reports can be madevia the local hotline at 6681 5757 or through Metrash2 app or by emailing cccc@moi.gov.qa.
