Paris: German Olympic chief Thomas Weikert says the controversy surrounding 23 Chinese swimmers being cleared despite positive doping tests must be sorted out before the Paris Olympics. In April, it was revealed that the swimmers had tested positive for the heart medication trimetazidine at a national competition in China in early 2021. The Chinese anti-doping agency attributed the positive tests to contamination in a hotel kitchen and refrained from imposing bans, a decision upheld by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Some of the swimmers went on to compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and will also race in Paris, with the Games starting on Friday. Despite fierce criticism led by the US, an independent investigator from Switzerland found no misconduct on the part of WADA and the swimmers remain able to compete. (DPA)
