German heptathlete Carolin Schäfer will end her career highlighted by a world championship silver medal after next month’s Olympic competition in Paris.

"Paris will be my last dance,” Schäfer said on Instagram on Monday.

"I have been pondering this decision for a long time and with the Olympic Games in Paris I can’t think of a better way to end my career than to say goodbye on the world’s biggest sporting stage.”

Schäfer, 32, won silver at the 2017 worlds in London and also has a bronze medal from the 2018 European Championship in Berlin. Her personal best points tally is 6,836 for second all-time in Germany.

The Olympic heptathlon is scheduled for August 8 and 9 at the Stade de France.

"I am fulfilled, grateful and happy to have had such a long and successful career and am looking forward to all the new adventures and stages in my life that await me after Paris,” Schäfer said.
