Qatar is swiftly emerging as a frontrunner in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), driving transformative changes across industries and significantly improving daily life, according to experts.

By leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies, the country is pioneering new advancements that are setting global benchmarks. This dynamic approach is placing Qatar at the forefront of technological innovation, where its strategic investments and visionary initiatives are propelling it to become a key player in the global AI landscape.

The size of the artificial intelligence market in Qatar was estimated at approximately $31 million in 2022 and it is expected to grow at a rate of 17.4 percent annually, reaching $58.8 million by 2026, the experts said.

This rapid growth reflects Qatar’s increasing investment in AI technologies and their integration into various sectors, supporting the country’s broader vision of becoming a regional leader in technological innovation.

Building smart cities

Qatar’s vision of smart cities is becoming a reality, thanks to AI. These cities aim to improve quality of life through interconnected systems managing traffic flow, energy consumption and more.

"Qatar’s approach to smart cities is impressive,” noted Dr Mohammad Rashid, an AI professor from India. "AI-driven solutions optimise traffic management, reduce energy use and predict maintenance needs for infrastructure. These innovations are about more than convenience — they promote sustainability and efficiency.”

A prime example is Lusail City, a futuristic development that uses AI to manage utilities, ensuring efficient resource use and minimal environmental impact.

"Lusail sets a benchmark for urban planning globally,” Dr Rashid added.

Driving economic growth

Qatar is embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where AI is a key driver of industrial innovation. The adoption of AI technologies in manufacturing and logistics is boosting productivity and economic growth.

"AI is a catalyst for economic diversification in Qatar,” Dr Rashid stated. "Industries adopting AI can optimise operations, cut costs and enhance productivity. This not only strengthens the economy but also creates high-tech job opportunities.”

Predictive maintenance is a significant area of impact. AI analyses data from machinery to predict when maintenance is needed, preventing costly breakdowns and minimising downtime.

"This proactive approach is transforming industries, making them more efficient,” Dr Rashid explained.

AI in health

In Qatar, AI is revolutionising healthcare, leading to more accurate diagnostics and personalised treatments. Hospitals and clinics are increasingly using AI to enhance patient care.

"AI has the potential to revolutionise healthcare in Qatar,” said Dr Somaya Al Khattab, a PhD holder in AI from the University of Jordan. "AI-powered diagnostics allow us to detect diseases earlier and more accurately, which saves lives and reduces healthcare costs by enabling timely interventions.”

Dr Khattab also highlighted AI’s role in predictive analytics. "Imagine a system where we can forecast disease outbreaks and prepare for them in advance. AI helps us analyse vast amounts of data to identify patterns and trends, making this possible,” she explained.

Revolutionising education

AI is transforming education in Qatar, making learning more personalised and effective. Schools and universities are adopting AI to enhance both teaching and administrative processes.

"AI in education is a game-changer,” Dr Khattab explained. "It enables personalised learning paths tailored to each student’s needs, making education more inclusive and effective. Additionally, AI tools help educators handle administrative tasks more efficiently, allowing more focus on teaching.”

AI-powered platforms adapt to each student’s learning pace and style, offering customised content and feedback. "This helps students understand concepts better and stay engaged,” she said.

Leading global AI revolution

Qatar is well-positioned to lead in AI innovation. The country’s strategic vision and investments in technology set the stage for remarkable advancements. "Qatar’s commitment to AI is creating a future where AI is integrated into all aspects of life,” Dr Khattab said. "From healthcare to education, smart cities to industry, AI will drive progress and enhance quality of life.”

Dr Rashid echoed this, highlighting AI’s potential to address global challenges.

"AI can tackle pressing issues like climate change and healthcare disparities. Qatar is at the forefront of these efforts, using AI for the greater good,” he said.

GoVt support and innovation

The Qatari government is crucial in fostering a vibrant AI ecosystem through strategic investments, supportive policies and partnerships with tech companies.

"The government’s commitment to AI is clear in its national strategies and investments,” said Enineer Ahmed al Marri, a leading AI researcher in Qatar. "Initiatives like the Qatar National Artificial Intelligence Strategy are paving the way for groundbreaking advancements and attracting global talent.”

Eng Marri emphasised the role of AI research centres and innovation hubs in supporting startups and researchers.

"These centres foster a collaborative ecosystem where ideas can flourish and lead to real-world applications,” he explained.

As AI continues to evolve, Qatar’s forward-thinking strategies and investments will yield significant advancements, benefiting both its citizens and the global community. Qatar’s journey in AI reflects its vision, resilience and commitment to a future where technology and human ingenuity go hand in hand.

In Qatar, the future is about leading a global AI revolution. The nation’s innovative spirit and strategic foresight are shaping a smarter, more sustainable future for all.

Today, AI systems are integral to various sectors, from healthcare and finance to manufacturing and transportation. These intelligent systems, powered by advanced algorithms and vast data processing capabilities, are enhancing efficiency, accuracy and decision-making.

For instance, AI-driven diagnostics are providing more precise medical predictions, while automated financial models are optimising investment strategies. The global impact of AI is profound, as it drives innovation, creates new business opportunities and addresses complex challenges across diverse fields.

The rapid evolution of AI technologies is also sparking debates about their ethical implications and societal effects. As AI becomes more embedded in everyday life, concerns about privacy, job displacement and algorithmic biases are increasingly coming to the forefront.

The potential for AI to both benefit and disrupt highlights the need for responsible development and regulation. Policymakers, businesses and researchers are now focusing on creating frameworks to ensure that AI advancements are harnessed ethically and inclusively.

Balancing innovation with ethical considerations will be crucial as AI continues to transform our world, ensuring that its benefits are widely shared and its risks are effectively managed.
