Paris: World champion Remco Evenepoel lives up to his top billing to claim a first men’s Olympic road cycling time trial gold medal for Belgium on a rainy afternoon in Paris. Evenepoel took the gold six days after his third place finish at the Tour de France, 15 seconds ahead of Italy’s Filippo Ganna as they finished in the same order as at last year’s worlds. There was more joy for Belgium when Wout van Aert took bronze, to go with road race silver from the Tokyo 2020 Games. Conditions were difficult for all riders on the slippery 32.4 kilometres course but there appeared to be less crashes than in the women’s race won by Australian Grace Brown. (dpa)
