Nine months after his escape during a supervised outing, a convicted murderer in Germany was caught in Moldova’s capital Chișinău, law enforcement officials in the German state of Baden-Württemberg said on Sunday.

The 44-year-old German-Kazakh man had been serving his life sentence at the Bruchsal correctional facility, near the city of Karlsruhe, when he managed to flee from two correctional officers in October.

The escape occurred during a supervised outing at a quarry lake. The prisoner fled into an adjacent forest after meeting his wife and children. The electronic ankle bracelet he had been wearing was found a short time later in the nearby town of Germersheim.

Baden-Württemberg’s Justice Ministry said the man, who was in prison for strangling someone to death, was apprehended in coordinated operation with Moldovan authorities.

The two officers from Bruchsal prison received a fine for allowing the prisoner to escape.
