MoscowcTypeface:> Eight carriages derailed from a train travelling in the Volgograd region in southern Russia, state-owned Russian Railways said on Monday.

The company said the accident occurred when a lorry driver tried to cross a railway crossing, resulting in it colliding with a train.

Russian media reported up to 100 injuries, but there was no immediate official confirmation. Videos posted to social media on Monday showed overturned carriages in an uninhabited area.

The train, which was travelling from Kazan, the capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, to Adler on the Black Sea, was said to have had 800 passengers on board.

The railway is considered one of the most essential and reliable means of transport in the world’s largest country, measured by area. Kazan is some 850kmeast of Moscow. Accidents are relatively rare. However, in recent years, there have been several acts of sabotage on railway tracks by opponents of Russia’s war against Ukraine. (DPA)
