Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in Uganda have been charged with terrorism and could face a prison term, Ugandan media outlet UG Standard reported on Monday.
The Ugandan prosecutors believe that 36 people aged 25-55 years, including 33 men and 3 women, have travelled to Kenya to undergo training in "terrorism”, the media outlet wrote.
The opposition party members that were arrested in Kenya and were deported to Uganda will remain in custody until August 13.
The 36 people, who are members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), one of Uganda’s biggest opposition parties, deny the charges. Their lawyer, Erias Lukwago, told reporters outside the magistrates’ court in Kampala the charges were "ridiculous”.
Kenyan authorities detained and then deported the 36 people after they had travelled to the western Kenyan city of Kisumu on July 23 to take part in a leadership and governance training course, their lawyer and party officials said.
Last week, local police said that more than 100 participants of the "march to the parliament” protest had been detained from July 22–25.
