Britain’s Nathan Hales claimed men’s trap shooting gold with an Olympic record performance on Tuesday, after Serbia had rallied to air pistol mixed event gold.

Last year’s world championship runner-up Hales hit 48 of the 50 moving clay pigeon targets at the Chateauroux shooting centre on his Olympic debut as he held off China’s Qi Ying who managed 44.

The bronze medal went to Guatemala’s Jean-Pierre Brol Cardenas, after Swedish rival Rickard Levin-Andersson missed three of his last five targets.

Earlier, Serbia’s Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec claimed the air pistol gold with a dramatic 16-14 comeback victory over Turkey’s Sevval Ilayda Tarhan and Yusuf Dikec on Tuesday.

Former women’s event world champion Arunovic and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Mikec trailed 8-2 and 14-12 but came back strong to clinch the gold in the final round with a joint 20.1 score to the Turks’ 19.3.

"It was a real roller-coaster,” Arunovic said. "It was a nerve-racking ending but Damir gave us the final shot.

"It was really stressful but I hope we put on a good show for people who have come here. Not many people usually come to watch shooting but I hope the audience enjoyed a good display of shooting.” The silver is meanwhile Turkey’s first ever shooting medal at the Olympics.

Tarhan and Dikec had also come second at last year’s world championships. They reached the final as qualifying winners.

The bronze medal went to India’s Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh, who beat South Koreans Lee Wonho and Oh Je Jin 16-10. Bhaker had also won bronze in the women’s individual event.
