Former gymnast Adriana Ruano Oliva made Olympic history for Guatemala on Wednesday by winning a first ever gold medal for the central American country, in women’s trap shooting at the Paris Games. Ruano Oliva hit an Olympic record 45 of the 50 moving clay pigeon targets for a famous victory at the Chateauroux shooting centre, already clinching the gold with four shots to spare. Former world championship bronze medallist Silvana Maria Stanco of Italy won silver with 40 targets and Australia’s Penny Smith took bronze. Guatemala had previously won two Olympic medals, a 20km race walk silver from Erick Barrondo in 2012, and men’s trap bronze from Jean-Pierre Brol Cardenas on Tuesday.
