Shinnosuke Oka extended Japan’s winning streak to four Olympics when he claimed the men’s gymnastics all-around gold medal on Wednesday.

The Asian world champion, 20, showed few nerves on his Games debut to tally 86.832 points from the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.

In a tight contest in Paris, Japan edged China yet again having snatched gold in Monday’s team event thanks in part to Oka.

China’s Zhang Boheng took individual silver after flopping early on the floor while bronze went to Tokyo silver medallist Xiao Ruoteng, who landed on his knees off the bar in Monday’s team event to help cost China gold.

Tokyo all-around and double world champion Daiki Hashimoto stopped his pommel horse routine halfway through before restarting to end his hopes and place sixth behind Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun and Briton Joe Fraser.

The women’s all-around takes place at the Bercy Arena on Thursday when American icon Simone Biles goes for a sixth career Olympic gold.
