MoscowcTypeface:> Moldova, which lies between Romania and Ukraine and is striving to join the European Union, has expelled a Russian diplomat.
The Russian ambassador, Oleg Vasnetsov, was summoned to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry and personally informed of the decision, the authorities in the capital Chisinauannounced on Thursday.
The embassy employee had carried out activities that were incompatible with diplomatic status, the statement said. Previously, allegations had been made that a Russian diplomat had recruited an employee of the Moldovan parliament and an employee of the border guard service.
According to a statement from the public prosecutor’s office, both Moldovans were provisionally arrested, and a search carried out in parliamentary rooms. They are being investigated for high treason and conspiracy against Moldova, the Foreign Ministry said, adding that the recruitment attempts took place in 2023. (DPA)
