Vietnamese President To Lam was elected as the new leader of the Communist Party (CPV), the nation’s top position, on Saturday, a statement from the party said.

Lam took over the position the day before the death of former chair Nguyen Phu Trong on July 19.

Lam will remain in this position until the next National Congress in January 2026, when the CPV will elect the nation’s leaders for the next five years, the party said in a statement posted in state media.

Lam was named president by the National Assembly in May, becoming the third president in Vietnam in less than 18 months.

Vietnam is officially led by four “pillars”: the general secretary, the president, the prime minister and the chairman of the National Assembly.

Trong, who helmed the party for 13 years, died last month aged 80 after suffering from ill health. Tens of thousands gathered on the streets of Hanoi to pay their respects to Trong during a funeral procession.
