Washington: The Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, are engaged in a tussle over their televised debate.

Trump announced late Friday on his online platform Truth Social that he had single-handedly settled on a debate to be aired by the Republican-friendly channel Fox News on September 4.

Harris replied on Saturday that Trump was trying to wiggle out of a previously agreed debate set for September 10 on the traditional broadcast network ABC.

Trump and President Joe Biden had originally planned on having two TV debates, the second of which was to take place on September 10 on ABC. Biden’s disastrous performance in the first debate against Trump at the end of June triggered a political earthquake that ultimately led to Biden’s withdrawal from the race, paving the way for Harris to replace him on the ballot when voters go to the polls on November 5.
