Saudi Arabia started trial operations of a new border crossing with Qatar in Salwa on Monday.

The new facility will raise the number of vehicles crossing the border by more than 24,000 from the current 3,000, according to Saudi Arabia's AlEkhbariya news channel.

The capacity increase comes ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which is expected to bring a huge number of people by road to Qatar from Saudi Arabia and other parts of the region.

The new Salwa border crossing would primarily contribute to enhancing the vehicles and passengers traffic, in addition to promoting trade and economic relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Governor of the Saudi's Eastern Province Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz was quoted as saying by the Qatar News Agency (QNA) on Monday

The governor inspected the trial operation of the passengers' section of the border crossing on Monday.

Governor of Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority of Saudi Arabia Suhail bin Mohammed Abanmi said the project of the new Salwa border crossing has been fully equipped with the essential integrated services and utilities for the service of all passing vehicles and passengers, affirming that the border crossing would represent a vital supporter to enhance vehicle and travellers traffic, in addition to promoting trade volume and economic relations between the two countries.
