Japan beat Italy 45-36 in the men’s team foil final to get a second fencing gold at the Paris Olympics in the final event on Sunday. Japan held a slender 35-34 going into the penultimate leg but there Yudai Nagano won a duel of alternates 5-0 against Alessio Foconi, and Kazuki Iimura clinched the gold against Tommaso Marini. Japan finished the fencing events at the famous Grand Palais venue as the most successful nation, with two gold, one silver and two bronze. The other gold came in men’s épée from Koki Kano. Hosts France beat the United States 45-32 for bronze and amassed the most medals, seven which include one gold. (DPA)
