Beirut

Beirut International Airport descended into chaos on Monday after several international airlines temporarily suspended their flights to Lebanon due to concerns about a military escalation in the Middle Eastern country.

Many passengers have been waiting for their flight since the early hours of the morning. Sources at the airport told DPA that the queues were massive, with delays leading to passenger panic in some cases.

Many travellers are frustrated because they have missed connecting flights. “I was suppose to fly to Germany via Istanbul at dawn, but the flight kept getting postponed,” Ahmed a passenger told DPA.

“Now we are suppose to take off at 6pm (1500 GMT),” he said.

A father of five said they have been at the airport since Sunday. Their flight to the Turkish city of Istanbul was postponed several times.

The airport in Beirut is the only international airport in the country.

In addition to the German Lufthansa group, the French airline Air France and various airlines from the Arab region also temporarily suspended their flights to and from the Lebanese capital.

The situation in the Middle East has recently become significantly worse.
