Islamabad: Extreme weather events have displaced more people in Afghanistan in the first six months of this year than in the entire year 2023, according to a statement by the aid organization Save the Children.

Climate disasters have become the leading cause of displacement in crisis-ridden Afghanistan, according to the NGO.

Since the beginning of this year, at least 38,000 people have had to leave their homes.

Afghanistan has the second-largest population of internally displaced persons in the world, totalling 6.3 million, according to Save the Children.

“The climate crisis is exacerbating the humanitarian emergency situation in Afghanistan,” says Florian Westphal, managing director of Save the Children Germany.Droughts in particular are increasingly affecting the country. (DPA)
