Copenhagen: A court in Denmark sentenced a Polish citizen to four months in prison on Wednesday for punching Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The Copenhagen District Court also ruled that the 39-year-old should be deported when he has served his prison sentence. The man hit Frederiksen on the upper arm with his fist in the centre of Copenhagen on June 7, as she was on her way to have coffee with a friend.

Frederiksen suffered a slight whiplash injury. She cancelled several appointments in the days following the attack. A friend testified in court that the prime minister was "visibly shaken” after the assault. The Polish man, who has lived in Denmark for five years, denied hitting Frederiksen. The Ritzau news agency reported that he told the court he had been having "a bad day” on June 7. Both witnesses and the man stated that he was drunk at the time. (DPA)
