Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East.

Macron called upon Pezeshkian to do everything possible to prevent further military escalation, which would benefit no one, not even Iran, and would cause lasting damage to regional stability, Macron’s office, the Élysée Palace, said on Wednesday evening.

There are fears of a military strike by Iran and its allies against Israel.

In the telephone conversation with Pezeshkian, Macron said that Iran must call on the destabilizing actors it supports to show maximum restraint to avoid a widespread conflict. Macron stressed the importance of moving away from the logic of retaliation, and instead protecting the civilian population, the Élysée Palace said.

Additionally, Macron reiterated France’s position in favour of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a firm rejection of any escalation with Lebanon. Macron emphasized France’s commitment to work on a credible political framework for peace and security in the region, provided that Iran adheres to its international obligations, the Élysée Palace said.
